What's the mobile network situation? Will I stay connected?

Post by ajaysengar »

Network is patchy - be prepared for digital detox!

Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi, and Joshimath have decent signals. BSNL works better than private operators in most mountain areas. Jio improved a lot recently but still has dead zones.

Between towns? Forget it. Long stretches have zero connectivity. The drive from Uttarkashi to Gangotri, for example, has maybe 2-3 spots with weak signals. Same with routes to Kedarnath and Badrinath.

We downloaded offline maps before leaving Delhi. Google Maps offline mode saved us multiple times. Also downloaded movies and music because you'll need entertainment during long drives.

Internet is slow even where available. Don't expect video calls or uploading photos. Basic WhatsApp messages work occasionally. Most hotels have WiFi but it's painfully slow.

Inform family beforehand that you'll be unreachable for days. We set up a check-in system - called home whenever we got signal to confirm we're safe.
For those traveling Delhi to Chardham yatra by tempo traveller, carry a power bank and car charger. Your phone drains faster searching for signals constantly.

Honestly, the disconnection was refreshing!
