Are Book Editing Services Worth the Investment?

Has anyone here used book editing services and felt they made a real difference in the final manuscript? With so many options developmental, line editing, proofreading it’s hard to know which level is truly necessary. Do professional editors noticeably improve pacing, clarity, and structure, or can careful self-editing achieve similar results? I’d love to hear experiences from authors who’ve tried these services and whether the investment actually helped their book perform better with readers.
