Regular pruning of basil helps to promote more growth and also helps the plant not to grow tall and leggy. The plant should be cut off at the top when it becomes big (approximately 6-8 inches), and it will be cut just over a leaf node. Leaf harvests are often and never cut off more than a third of the plant at a time. The flower buds are to be taken off right away because flowering causes the plant to reduce the production of leaves, and the basil leaves may be bitter in flavor. Know more about Growing Basil
